There
are varying opinions of how long it takes to become a master in a given
discipline. While it is the custom in most artistic circles to define a
master through peer recognition- a process which has great merit- we
feel that the optimum definition comes from individuals who take
possession of the artists work; those who look upon it, use it, and
live with it day by day. In the end, the master must seek to gain the
approval of this latter group by reaching the highest possible standard
in his or her respective discipline. What follows will give you an
indication of the standards we consistently maintain in creating fine
craft.
Each
piece we make begins with the design stages. We first offer a private
consultation, after which drawings are submitted for your approval. On
complex projects, multiple meetings might be required. This is one of
the most exciting stages of the process where decisions are arrived at
on style, proportion and wood species. It is here also that we offer
our bespoke programme with all of the possibilities that will make your
commission a statement about who you are.
After we receive
approval on your design, we begin the arduous undertaking of
selecting the wood. Most furniture companies pay little or no attention
to what is called ‘grain matching,’ yet it plays an
important role in our designs, lending a quietly harmonious feature to
each piece that will complement and enhance its surroundings.
In ensuring the
structural integrity of our work, we eschew the tendency
to rely on man-made fasteners, preferring the time honored methods of
solid wood joinery. Whenever possible, it is our preference to showcase
the finely crafted joinery, making it a decorative feature to the
otherwise clean lines of our work. In this too, we strike out in a
different direction from nearly the entire manufactured world which
seems to favor hidden structure; a snare that lends itself to careless
workmanship. Exposing the complex and carefully cut joints lends a
reassurance of quality and adds visual delight.
After assembly is
complete, and the sanding finished, each piece is signed
and dated as befits a fine work of art.
Finishing high end
furniture is an art form in its own right. Through experience
we have come to the conclusion that the best finishes also require the
most effort. We love the purity of using materials in their natural
state. That is why, after sanding the raw wood to 400 grit, we hand-rub
pure linseed oil; a method that has been in use for
centuries. Between each of the five coats, we polish the finish for
deep protection and the perfect luster. This method is non-toxic,
allows the wood to age gracefully and perhaps most importantly,
showcases the unique complexity and depth of its color and grain to its
best advantage, all the while leaving the burnished texture of the wood
available to the inquisitive human touch.
