Nova
Scotia has a rich
heritage of furniture makers; much of their work has survived until
today, a
testimony to their careful and respectful approach.
As
a small, but
exclusive studio, we feel a moral imperative to carry on this cultural
tradition; sustainability and careful use of natural resources has
never been
more current than now.
Beginning
in 2004, Jonathan
Otter-
Furniture Maker was in operation and has experienced greater
recognition than
could have been foreseen. In that same year, Jonathan
was awarded Juried Status from the Nova Scotia Designer Crafts Council
for both
creativity and workmanship. He has since taught classes in methods of
hand-cut
joinery and exhibited in a number of shows, most notably in the Mary E.
Black
Gallery in Halifax.
Earltown,
where our
workshop and gallery are located, is a picturesque community
in
the
Cobequid Hills of Nova Scotia. Earltown is quickly
becoming
a
destination in its own right. The Sugar Moon Farm,
a
working maple farm
and
exquisite maple themed restaurant that features the very best of local
organic
edibles draws visitors from all over the world. A network of carefully
crafted
hiking trails, such as Rogarts Mountain Trail, offer rewarding views of
the Cobequid Hills and
serve to emphasize that this part of the
world offers something rare and beautiful to those who make
the
effort
to visit. Our small furniture gallery highlights a
different
aspect
of this micro-culture, but one that is nonetheless authentic and
beautiful. In
addition to our solid wood creations, we are gradually adding lifestyle
accessories from artists with whom we feel a close aesthetic bond. For
this
summer, we will be featuring the paintings of Mark
Brennan,
one of Nova Scotia's
best known landscape artists. You are invited to contact us for
an invitation to experience firsthand what it would be like to
live with
our fine craft and art from day to day.
